You may be most familiar with rhinoplasty as a cosmetic procedure that reshapes your nose. Functional rhinoplasty does that as well, along with fixing your breathing problems at the same time.

What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that’s used to reshape the nose. It can be used to make changes to the bone, skin, and cartilage of your nose.
A cosmetic rhinoplasty focuses on your nose’s appearance, size, and balance when compared to the overall shape and structure of your face. A surgeon can make changes to the tip of the nose, straighten a crooked nose, decrease the size of your nostrils, or remove an obvious bump that distorts the line of your nose.
A functional rhinoplasty also changes the shape and appearance of your nose but is focused on repairing issues that may be interfering with your breathing. Dr. Arnholt may recommend a functional rhinoplasty to widen or narrow your nasal passages, straighten a misaligned nose, and correct other problems that keep you from breathing freely.
If necessary, a functional rhinoplasty may include a septoplasty, which straightens the thin inner wall of cartilaginous tissue separating your nasal passages.
What is revision rhinoplasty?
A primary rhinoplasty describes the first “nose job” you undergo. Revision rhinoplasty describes any rhinoplasty that’s done after a primary rhinoplasty.
Patients typically request revision rhinoplasty when they are dissatisfied with the appearance or function of their nose after the first surgery. Dr. Arnholt has the surgical skills necessary for revision rhinoplasty, which may require tackling scar tissue, cartilage loss, and other problems pertaining to the initial surgery.
What can I expect after rhinoplasty?
Dr. Arnholt discusses aftercare and recovery expectations in detail before the procedure and gives you plenty of time to ask questions. Generally, however, you can expect nasal congestion for several days after the procedure.
Bed rest with your head elevated higher than your chest is required to reduce swelling and decrease the risk of bleeding. Strenuous activity may be limited for several weeks until your nose has a chance to heal. Most patients have bruising around the eyes following rhinoplasty, which fades and resolves over two to three weeks.
